La Gymnema, “distruttore del dolce”
Gymnema (Gymnema silvestre) is a climbing plant from India. Its Hindi name, gurmar means “sugar destroyer”. In fact, when the gurmar leaves are chewed, the tongue becomes insensitive to sweet flavours for an hour. Modern science has found special substances, gymnemic acids, in Gymnema which can reduce the absorption of sugars.
