This microscopic yeast, used to ferment rice, is an ancient traditional Chinese remedy that has recently revealed the ability to affect endogenous cholesterol, helping to adjust it naturally. The main element in play is Monakolin K, a functional ingredient of Monascus. Monacolin K has been shown to reduce the activity of HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the synthesis of cholesterol itself.
