The hydrochloric acid secreted by specialized cells in the stomach is one of the most powerful acids in nature, with a pH of between 1 and 3. Its aim is to “disinfect” the gastric environment of germs and promote the digestion of proteins. During digestion, these acids are neutralized by the alkali produced naturally by the liver and pancreas, in which food passes immediately after. That is why sometimes just rebalancing the functions of these organs is enough to get rid of heartburn.
